Facts About GAF Roof Deck Protection & Underlayment
Today’s residential roofing systems are built with a waterproofing layer known as underlayment. Roofing manufacturer GAF offers a wide selection of underlayment products that cater to almost every roofing application. Roofing contractor Georgia Roof Advisors explains why underlayment is an essential part of the GAF Lifetime Roofing System. How Underlayment Works Underlayment, also known as roofing felt, is the waterproofing material that serves as the barrier between the wood decking material and the outer layer of asphalt shingles. In the past, underlayment was made of paper soaked in asphalt. As products continue to be improved, roofing manufacturers have developed underlayment that outperforms its predecessors. Here’s how underlayment is installed on a typical sloped roof. After the decking is prepared or replaced, roofers install leak barriers along valleys and edges. Rolls of underlayment are then unrolled, measured and cut to size. Specific installation instructions, such as minimum overlap, type of fasteners and the underlayment product itself, are dictated by factors such as the roof slope. GAF Roof Deck Protection GAF recognizes the need for different types of underlayment products and offers several underlayment options: 1. Synthetic —GAF’s synthetic underlayment is made of polypropylene. FeltBuster® is the standard underlayment used on traditional three-tab shingle installations. For enhanced protection requirements, GAF offers Deck-Armor™ and Tiger Paw™. 2. Shingle-Mate® —Shingle-Mate is reinforced by fiberglass, designed to work with nearly every type of decking material. It lays flat, which prevents wrinkles from “telegraphing” onto the outer asphalt shingle layer. 3. VersaShield® —VersaShield is another type of underlayment also reinforced by fiberglass, with enhanced resistance against fire and penetration from impact. Its UL Class A rating automatically upgrades the UL fire classification of the roof it’s on. 4. RoofPro™ —RoofPro is GAF’s top-tier underlayment and is reinforced by fiberglass and modified bitumen (SBS), making it on par with heavy-duty commercial roofs. It provides enhanced protection against water intrusion and impact damage.
